What is the study about?

  • The AIC is a collaboration of specialized psychiatric hospital units, currently including the Center for Autism and Developmental Disorders (CADD) unit at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital, the Developmental Disorders Program at Spring Harbor Hospital, and the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.
  • The primary goal is to develop a comprehensive registry of clinical and biological data on children, adolescents, and adults with autism.
  • The researchers plan to look at the dimensions of expressive language ability, emotional regulation, psychiatric co-morbidity, aggression, self-injurious behavior and intelligence, and to examine the relationships among these critical factors.

Am I right for the study?

  • Eligibility for enrollment into the study is based on admission into one of the AIC inpatient units.

What would I do in the study?

  • Caregiver and self-report questionnaires: Standardized questionnaires and forms about the participant’s behavior and medical history, family history, demographics, adaptive skills, ways of communicating, parenting concerns, etc.
  • Assessments: Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule- 2nd Edition (ADOS-2), Leiter 3 (nonverbal intellectual assessment)
  • Biological sample: Collection of blood or saliva samples from the participant and their biological parents
  • Spark: Enrollment in this online research database

Will I be paid?

  • There is compensation provided for caregivers who participate in the biological samples and Spark enrollment.
